New Development: Pricing Manager – Current Price Increase, Fee History, and Bulk Modification in One Place
The success of a law firm does not solely depend on professional work. Pricing strategy is at least as crucial: if fees do not keep pace with the market environment, the firm's revenues decrease in real terms year by year - while operating costs continuously rise.
One of the most important lessons of inflationary years is that pricing cannot be set once and then forgotten. It requires regular review, just like any other business process of the firm. To support this, Flowyer has developed the new Pricing Manager module, which covers the entire lifecycle of pricing: from fee determination to current modification and bulk updates.
A New Approach to Fee Management
The Pricing Manager is accessible in the Billing menu, and its overview interface immediately displays the firm's pricing overview: the office's base hourly rate, the number of active client fees, the flat and hourly fees assigned to cases, and pending modifications. The latter is particularly useful: the office manager can see at a glance how many fee changes are awaiting implementation and which will come into effect soon.
The module allows for fee management in four basic categories: at the office base hourly rate level, with client-specific hourly rates, with monthly flat fees assigned to cases, and with case-level unique hourly rates. This fourfold division covers most fee structures encountered in law firm practice.
Current Fee Modification: Past and Present Can Be Managed Independently
The core innovation of the development is current fee management. When recording a fee modification, the effective date can be specified, so the new pricing is only applicable from that date. Work hours and billings recorded in the previous period are calculated with the old fee unchanged.
The significance of this cannot be overstated. Previously, a simple hourly rate increase meant that office statistics were calculated retroactively with the new amount, distorting period comparisons, revenue trends, and profitability analyses. Current management addresses this issue at its root: each period appears in reports with its valid pricing.
In the fee history section, all past and future pricing can be tracked chronologically. It shows who recorded each modification and when, which has already come into effect, and which is still awaiting implementation. Each change can be accompanied by a note - for example, "Increase due to 2025 inflation" - which provides context for the decision even later.
Bulk Fee Update: Annual Price Increase Can Be Completed in Minutes
Executing the annual fee review is one of the most time-consuming administrative tasks for law firms. If the firm has dozens of active clients with different pricing, individual modifications can easily take half a day or even a full workday. Additionally, there is a risk that a client or case may be missed in the update and continue with outdated pricing for months.
The Pricing Manager's bulk modification feature offers a solution to this. The office manager can update the pricing of multiple clients or cases at once: select the affected parties, specify the new fee and the effective date, and the system executes the modification in a single operation. Bulk updates can be applied to both hourly and flat fee structures, and naturally, all modifications are recorded with effect.
Metrics to Build On
A law firm is also a business, whose sustainability is based on measurable and analyzable business indicators. Thanks to current fee management, Flowyer's statistical module works with period-accurate data, allowing the office manager to receive informed answers to the most important questions: how did the firm's revenue develop before and after the price increase, in which client segment is fee correction justified, and in which direction has the firm's average hourly rate moved over the past years.
These metrics are not retrospective curiosities - they are starting points for developing the annual fee strategy. The next year's review can thus be based not on subjective intuition but on concrete data.
